6-Speed Transmission Swap Guide for 70-83 Datsun 240z | 260z | 280z | 280zx | Fairlady Z
Historically we have offered fully rebuilt 240sx 5-Speed transmission swap kits for the Datsun market, but over the years, good rebuildable cores, and replacement parts have become increasingly hard to find. We exhausted all of our JDM sources for rebuild parts, and could no longer guarantee a quality product that would perform at 100%, so we discontinued offering them. We have proudly partnered with DatsunWorks to bring 2 different 6-speed conversions to the Datsun market, featuring 100% brand new parts.
When upgrading the drivetrain in a classic Datsun Z car, two standout options offered by us at GRW are the CD009/CD00A 6-Speed Swap and the Aisin TL70 6-Speed Swap. Both swaps offer performance improvements, but each has unique features and benefits depending on your power goals and installation preferences. Here's a detailed comparison to help you choose the best option for your build.
CD009 | CD00A 6-Speed Swap - $5,000 Plus Shipping
The CD00A (or CD009) 6-speed transmission swap is renowned for its exceptional strength and durability, making it the go-to choice for high-performance builds, especially those with turbocharged engines or high-output naturally aspirated setups. Here’s why the CD009 is a top choice:
Exceptional Strength and Durability – The CD009 is capable of handling upwards of 700 WHP with ease, making it one of the strongest 6-speed transmissions available for Datsun Z cars. It's perfect for high-powered turbo applications or high-torque builds that demand a durable and reliable transmission.
Transmission Tunnel Modification Required – Unlike some other swaps, the CD009 requires modifications to the transmission tunnel for proper fitment:
For 70-78 S30 chassis: The factory sheet metal structure that the OEM transmission crossmember mounts to must be cut out to create space for the significantly larger CD009 transmission case.
For 79-83 280ZX models: Some minor trimming of the shifter opening in the transmission tunnel is required to accommodate the larger CD009 transmission.
Crossmember Bracket Welding (for 79-83 280ZX) – For 1979-1983 280ZX models, welding crossmember brackets to the frame rails may be necessary to properly secure the transmission. This adds a level of complexity to the installation but ensures the transmission is mounted securely.
Custom Bellhousing – The swap kit includes a custom bellhousing designed to mate the CD00A transmission to L-Series engines, ensuring a smooth integration without extensive modifications.
Optimized Shifting and Power Delivery – The CD009 swap kit includes a short-throw shifter and steel driveshaft, which improve the driving experience and ensure optimal power transfer from the engine to the wheels.
Gear Noise at Idle – CD00x series transmissions do emit some noise at idle, particularly gear train clatter, minor input shaft noise, etc. This is heavily dependent on the type of clutch and flywheel combo you are running, aluminum seems to translate much more noise. We now offer a quiet-disc clutch option from Southbend Clutch that completely counteracts this noise.
GPS Speedometer Required – Both the CD009 and TL70 swaps require the use of a GPS speedometer, as the factory mechanical speedometer is incompatible with the modern transmissions' output.
While the CD009 requires some modification and installation work, its ability to handle extreme horsepower and torque makes it the best choice for high-performance turbo builds that demand both reliability and precise shifting.
TL70 6-Speed Swap - $5250 Plus Shipping
The Aisin TL70 6-Speed swap is a solid option for those who want a reliable, smooth-shifting transmission without the need for the extreme durability required for the highest power builds. Sourced from the Subaru BRZ, Toyota GT86, and Scion FRS, the TL70 is designed for performance but is more suited to moderate power applications. Here are the key features of the TL70 swap:
Designed for Moderate to High Power – The TL70 is designed to handle up to 375 WHP reliably, making it ideal for naturally aspirated engines or moderate turbo builds. This HP rating was set by us and DatsunWorks out of an abundance of caution. Some builders have claimed to have pushed up to 450whp through these gearboxes. We have not seen one fail yet, so that data has yet to come out.
No Modifications to Tunnel – The TL70 swap does not require modifications to the transmission tunnel, making it easier to install compared to the CD00A swap.
Custom Bellhousing and Shifter – The TL70 swap includes a custom bellhousing to mate the transmission to the L-Series engine, as well as a finely tuned shifter for smooth shifting and precise feel.
Clutch and Flywheel Compatibility – The TL70 requires a Subaru 230mm clutch disc and an RB26 flywheel for proper fitment, which adds a little bit more cost to the installation compared to the CD009, however this cost is offset by significantly less labor involved, especially if you’re paying a shop for the install.
GPS Speedometer Required – Like the CD009, the TL70 swap also requires a GPS speedometer to ensure accurate speed readings.
While the TL70 is less robust than the CD009, it’s still a solid choice for moderate performance builds, offering good durability and smooth shifting for those who don't need the extreme strength of the CD009.
Size and Weight Differences
The visual comparison of the two transmissions highlights their significant size differences. The CD009 is notably larger and bulkier than the TL70, contributing to its superior strength and torque-handling capabilities. The added size of the CD00A is one of the primary reasons for the required transmission tunnel modifications in Datsun Z cars. The CD009's case is heavier and longer, making it better suited for high-performance applications that prioritize durability over ease of installation.
In contrast, the TL70 is more compact and lighter, making it easier to install without cutting or modifying the transmission tunnel, as it is virtually the same dimensions as a factory Datsun 4 or 5 speed. This smaller size also contributes to smoother shifting, less rotational mass and a more balanced feel for moderate performance builds. This is especially pronounced in naturally aspirated builds, where rotating mass can be a major contributing factor to torque and power loss.
Conclusion
The CD009 6-Speed Swap is the ideal choice for high-powered turbo builds, capable of handling 700+ WHP with ease. If you're building a car that requires extreme performance, the CD00A will provide the strength and durability needed. However, it does require more complex installation, including transmission tunnel modifications and potential crossmember welding for 1979-1983 280ZX models.
For more moderate builds, the TL70 6-Speed Swap is a great option. It offers smooth shifting and reliable performance for builds producing up to 375 WHP without the need for tunnel modifications. The TL70 is easier to install and is ideal for those looking for a reliable, cost-effective performance upgrade. Used units are also significantly cheaper than the CD009
In the end, both swaps require a GPS speedometer, so be sure to account for this additional upgrade in your project plan. Choose the CD009 for high-performance, high-torque applications and the TL70 for a more balanced build with moderate power demands.
