Clive's 91' 300zx Twin Turbo JDM Homage


Clive has had this full bolt-on Z32 twin turbo for quite some time, long enough for this car to have a treasure trove of classic JDM goodies, with a few modern touches. This car was fully built almost 20 years ago, and then enjoyed over the last 2 decades. It eventually went into storage for a little while, as it developed some severe oil leaks, among other life changes.

Clive finally decided to pull it out of storage in late 2021 and have a full evaluation done by us, and get a complete idea of what it would take to restore the car back to it’s former glory. While we did find a whole host of oil leaks, typically we always recommend removing the engine for further inspection, rather than try to service all of the leaks in-frame, as it is much more cost effective working on an engine stand.

Upon further inspection, we found the beginnings of a major oil consumption issue in the typical form of blown ring lands on pistons #2, #4, and #6, a common issue on the VG30DETT platform once you start making serious horsepower increases. Fortunately we avoided a major investment into repairing external oil leaks and were able to avoid a major mechanical catastrophe from happening in the near future. With that being said, we gave this car the full GRW engine build treatment with a set of Wiseco Forged Pistons, Eagle Forged Connecting Rods, ported coolant jackets in the block, as well as rebuilding the cylinder heads, micro-polishing and re-balancing the rotating assembly, and while we had it apart, welding the counterweight bolts to the removable counter-weight so it would never become an issue.

Since the engine had already been extensively modified before we received it, this was a simple case of future-proofing the engine and making sure it was going to remain reliable for years to come.
